YouTube video of NCDC summer dance camp, an hour east of Fresno!

hey, Fresno dancers, hoopers, yogis and yoginis, community-seekers, vegetarians, progressives, and alternatives in general,

Here's a link to a video on YouTube of the Northern California Dance Collective's summer dance camp, made by some SoCal dance camp fans. Check it out, and then register to come to camp! The dates this year are June 13-22. It's 9 days of heaven, like living in a village of dancers, movers, musicians, hoopers, Frisbee fanatics and more, with great vegetarian meals, Kids Camp for the little ones, and an amazing community of people, all an hour east of Fresno in the southern Sierras. (You can also just come for a 3-day weekend, if you'd prefer.) Prices go up after June 1, so you save money if you register sooner rather than later. You can also check http://ncdcdances.org/ for lots of info and photos from previous camps.

keep dancing!

Two great dance camps outside Fresno...early reg rates end soon!

hey, folks -

If anyone is interested in those two dance camps I talked about a few weeks (and messages) ago, Camp Fareta and Northern California Dance Collective, the early registration rates for both of them end soon -- May 1 for Camp Fareta and May 10 for NCDC. So if you want to check them out, even for just a few days, now's the time to sign up, because the rates will be higher later on. (Or if you're not ready to commit, you can wait, because there's plenty of time left.) There's going to be a lot of amazing talent at these camps, folks that don't normally pass through Fresno, so you wanna be there!

And I think Fresno's own Kara Bithell will be teaching contact improv at NCDC -- we got Fresno in the house!

be well and keep on dancing --
April, 17 2008 at Art Hop!!! Songs 4 Pints performs @ Conley Gallery
5225 N. Backer Ave, Fresno, California 93740

April 17, 5-8 PM, in the courtyard just outside of the Conley Gallery @ CSUF.
Someone said something about a BBQ running there, too. I know. This all sounds weird. Songs 4 Pints performing an art gallery.
But I’m told we should be able to have Guinness, and hey.... BBQ... It’s going to be a lot of fun.
Casual atmosphere and no rushing to make room for the next act.
But the best most blessed part of the whole thing... we’ll be able to walk home after the show!!!
Go here for the Art Hop Venue Info Page. http://www.fresnoarthop.org/art-venues/csuf-conley-gallery/
Go here for a map to the event. I zeroed it in on exactly where we will be performing. Zoom out to see where it is. http://maps.yahoo.com/mvt=h&lat=36.811827&lon=-119.744019&zoom=20

Dance-a-Holics in Fresno?

hi, everyone -

I don't live in Fresno but I pass through there a few times a year...to go dancing in the mountains! In case any of you are dance-a-holics and aren't getting all your needs met in Fresno, here's the news on a couple of great opportunities to escape the heat and dance your a** off an hour outside of Fresno, in the southern Sierras.

NCDC Summer Camp, June 13-22, (ncdcdances.org) is more of a hippie/alternative camp in some ways -- vegetarian meals, progressive culture, clothing-optional waterfront, classes in all kinds of movement, art, and personal growth modalities, including contact improv, 5 Rhythms, African dance, yoga, authentic movement, Body Tales, breathwork and more. The participants are "dance-a-holics" from mostly the Bay area, branching out into Oregon and Washington and nothern and southern California. The classes are mostly beginner-level or mixed-level and most of the participants are white. There' s a great Kids Camp program so parents can dance and their kids will be taken care of.

Camp Fareta, July 6-13, (dancingvillage.com) is for folks who are into West African drum and dance (mostly Guinea-style, some artists from Senegal and Mali). There are some beginner-level classes but most classes are pretty fast-paced, geared to people who have some experience in this form. The meals cater to both vegetarians and meat-eaters, including some African food, and everyone keeps their swimsuit on at the waterfront! The participants come from all over the world, mostly the west coast but also Japan, Canada, Australia, etc. etc., and it's very racially diverse. There's a Kids Camp program there as well.

Both events happen at Camp Hye Sierra, which has a small lake for swimming and boating, hiking trails nearby, an open-air pavilion for dancing, a volleyball court, and lots of full-enclosed cabins as well as room for camping.

So check it out, and keep on dancing!

christina

Fresno Scifi-Fantasy Writers / Group Forming

FRESNO SCIFI-FANTASY WRITERS

I can't believe there's no group for this! (Is there?)

Let's start a monthly-ish group for face-to-face meetings to critique each other's writing. We'll hand out copies of our stories, and comment on them the next time we get together, and then hand out more copies, etc. We can talk about plots, character development (has anybody ever read Egri?), sentences & grammar & clarity, philosophy, conworlding, future tech (yikes), publishing (to web or not to web) ... WHATEVER WE LIKE, as long as it's about writing scifi & fantasy.

We can only learn to write better! And it'll be a great way to spend a few hours every month.

I've found TWO other interested parties so far. Let's make it a half-dozen or more!

Here's some samples of my work (free downloads, don't let the word 'store' scare you, this ain't a sales trick): http://store.mysteryandmagic.com/?toff ... try "Indiana" for scifi, or for fantasy try "Harb Zar" or "When The Moon Died."
Does anyone remember this club?

Hey, one of those nostalgia questions. When I used to live in Fresno (until the mid 90's) there was a nightclub in the tower district that had a lot of alternative music & we cannot remember the name. They had some well known acts and some great local bands like E is for Elephant & Let's Go Bowling used to play there a lot! I think it may have closed in the late 80's. All I can remember is that the name was somehow related to airplanes or flight. Boy the Alzheimer's is setting in! I'm also wondering if it is the same place that is now called, "Club Fred." Anyone remember it or know what the hell I'm talking about? Drawing a blank on the name is driving me crazy!

My favorite local band, Straight Up Sinners is looking for a bass player.
They are awesome & I love them, so please be serious with your inquiries.

The Suicide Lounge presents

"The Valentine Season Love Sucks Sessions"

Friday, Feb. 8, 2008 8 p.m.
Full Circle Brewing Co.
620 F St., Downtown Fresno
(just north of Ventura, nigh unto Chinatown)

Love is in the air and we're seeing red, so it's time for some music therapy.
We've got a bone to pick with Cupid. We'll take potshots at him all night.

Bring yourself, and your best (or worst, depending on your viewpoint) "Love Sucks" story, and you could win a prize. Or a hug. Or both.

We're here for you, man. We are.

And for those of you happily, contentedly paired... it's all good. We croon 'old standards' and groove 'new irregulars'. So sit back, have one of the many fine libations that only the Full Circle can supply, and enjoy the show. Only $5 at the door.

AAAAND... for any Rogue Festival performers out there... please drop by. All night we'll take moments for YOU to promote YOUR Rogue show.

It's the Valentine Season. Share the love.

coffee houses, nightlife, gay scene in Fresno?

All: I'm a journo doing a story on Fresno for a gay publication. Would like to know about cool coffee houses, clubs, etc.--mixed and alternative is fine, they don't have to be 100% gay or lesbian. Anything counterculture/alternative/otherwise cool will work. THANKS VERY MUCH for pointing me in the right direction!

My husband, dog, and I just spent 4 glorious days up at Huntington Lake. We camped at the Rancheria Campground, which is right on the lake. Our camp site was huge, which I loved. There were at least 2 places to rent water crafts for very reasonable prices. Saturday we rented a canoe and paddled all over the lake. Midday when the water was getting choppy we pulled the canoe out of the water and hiked around. Sunday morning we renting a fishing skiff and did a little fishing by the bridge. We got a few bites but didn't catch anything. We did see 5 other people pull fish out of the water over the weekend. We had lunch on the island by the dam. Then around 3pm we found 2 more islands with a beach between them. We could actually walk from island to island! We had so much fun. We had planned on also seeing the falls and going to mono hot springs. But that will have to be for another time. I love living in Fresno!

I am so blown away by yesterday's Summer of Love show.
Green Machine from Hanford, Gutterfish, RatBastard, the Rudy Parris band, Sippy & Old Guzzler, Simona (*amazing*), Heavy Weather, the Double Doors.... They were rocking everyone out, covering a variety of classic rock artists at an inexpensive, yet fantastic & memorable day at Woodward Park. It was a 40th anniversary tribute to 1967's Summer of Love & a recreation, if you will, of the kind of events that many generations can only watch films about.
Then Barry McGuire & Terry Talbot took the stage & did a set from their "Trippin' The 60's" show. Fresno is so lucky to be home to McGuire, who is still an inspiration to us little neo-hippies.
The grand finale was (the real) Big Brother & The Holding Co, with Cathy Richardson doing an outstanding job as Janis Joplin.
http://www.cathyrichardson.com/theater.html

The first band went on at noon, but the event lasted til well after 10pm-, with Cathy & Big Brother selling merchandise, doing meet & greet & signing autographs even after most vendors & attendees had gone home.

So...who else went?

I'm on a the Fresburg E-ventful mailing list.... got that way in an effort to bring comedian Tom Wilson here.

I have the lovely & talented Candye Kane on my myspace friends list.
But somehow it slipped by me that she's going to be in town next Wednesday!
Fortunately, the guide I just got had her listed. She'll be at the Crossroads.
The mailing said all day; somehow I doubt that.
Candye's Myspace says 8pm, but that's all the extra info I could get.
Might want to call The Crossroads & ask ... 222-2233
The Palms in Fresno

The Palms at 7550 N. Palm Ave., Suite 101, Fresno California (559) 438-0500 is located on the corner of Alluvial and Palm behind the new Warner's Jewelry store and by Weber BMW. The building is a gorgeous mission style with a fountain up front. There's ample parking, little to no traffic and plenty of tables are available while this remains a well kept Fresno secret. Inside is an elegant, tasteful mission style decor with beige and black accents. The chairs were of ample size and so was the table (unlike Campagnia - where I felt like a sardine in a can!) There's plenty of room between the tables, so private conversations can occur. You can dine inside or out on the patio. The patio has both heating and cooling systems for year round enjoyment. We chose the patio because the weather is so wonderful this time of year and breeze was so refreshing we hated to go inside and miss it!

The food at The Palms is absolutely divine! We had the Grand Seafood appetizer ~ it comes with Oysters Rockefeller, Shrimp, King Crab Legs , small daubs of Caviar and generous servings of fresh lemon, a pesto sauce and a seafood sauce. The serving tray is a huge blue glass and gunmetal blue metal tower ~ piled high with ice and food. The presentation was wonderfully done, with a stream of waiters and waitresses providing everything we needed to chow down and enjoy.

I had a Cosmopolitan with Ketel 1 Vodka to drink, it was absolutely delicious with fresh squeezed lime juice and beautiful to look at since it had an orchid balanced on the side of the glass. My companion had a Martini which arrived sans olives and the orchid; but the waitress promptly brought him some olives when he asked for some.

For dinner, I had Australian Lobster Tail with mushrooms, leeks and truffles; fresh vegetables and drawn butter. My companion had Filet Mignon with Two Potato Bake and fresh vegetables. The Beef had a delicious sauce that added to the way it just melted in your mouth! Mere words cannot describe the way these dishes tasted. Not only was the food indescribably delisious, the portions were generous and the presentation was absolutely perfect.

We had wines from their varied and extensive wine list with our dinner ~ the wines were wonderful and complemented the fod to perfection.

Alas, we were too full for dessert. I can only dream about how wonderful the dessert menu must be after eating such a delicious dinner!

I tell you what, if you are looking for a special place to take a date - SO, or someone for a truly delightful dinner and evening out - The Palms is, hands down, the best dining experience I have had in Fresno.

From the moment you get out of your car, it is elegant, special and divine!

Viva Fresno!

Kickboxing and pole dancing classes?

First of all, I'd like a recommendation on a good place to take kickboxing. I need to get some of this aggression out before I kick the walls of my cubicle down. Can anyone recommend a good place?

Secondly, has anyone been to the pole dancing classes at Sisters Yoga? What did you think? I'm reluctant to try it but I do want to. I've heard that pole dancing classes can be great exercise and a lot of fun. Is there anywhere else that offers those classes or is Sisters it for now?

Thanks!

Thrifting in Fresno

Hey!

So... Thrift Stores in San Francisco are ridiculous! So overpriced and picked over.

I'm in the market for some fun Vintage Cowgirl / Saloon Girl looks so I'm in the market for cowboy boots, cute western shirts, double holsters (heheehhe), bandanas, etc.

I was wondering if Fresno thrift stores might have a better selection in that realm.

Do you guys have any suggestions on where to go?
Would love to come out this weekend, even. And then maybe meet some of y'all out for a night on the Fresno town. :)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I work on a farm near Fresno and there is a family of cats that were abandoned on the land. Two of the kittens have really bad eye infections. One of them looks like the eye is gone. I try to give them scraps when I can and take out cat food from home. I would really like to get them taken care of and find homes for them. There are five cats altogether. I called the cat foundation and the SPCA but I was told all they would do was give me traps. I can’t pay for all of them to get treatment. They don’t really let me pet them but I was hoping they would be able to be tamed so they can be adopted. If any one has info please send me a message. Thanks so much

More news on Camp Fareta near Fresno -- dundun dance, balafon, Paypal

hey there, dancers and drummers --

Here are a few more pieces of information for you, in case you're still thinking of signing up for Camp Fareta in California, July 8-15, an hour east of Fresno, but haven't done so yet, or you're already signed up and want to get even more excited!

First, due to popular demand, we will have 2 dundun dance classes at camp, one with Mariama and one with Nima or M'Mah. One will occur earlier in the week and one will be later in the week.

Also Lansana will be available for balafon lessons. If we get enough people who want to study with him, we will offer the classes for free; otherwise they will be available for a separate fee. So let us know if that's something that interests you.

We also want to let you know that you can pay for camp with a credit card via Paypal. Just let us know if you'd like to use that option and we'll hook you up.

And a clarification -- the "regular" rates (not the early rates) for camp have been extended to July 2. That means the price is still $750 for the week or $120 a day. After July 2, we will be in the "late registration" category, with an extra $20 added on to each individual or family/group.

Check dancingvillage.com for lots of photos from last year's camp and a registration form for this year. We're looking forward to a great camp and we hope to see you there!

I don't live in Fresno but because I'm involved with a couple of camps that happen near Fresno, I joined these two e-newsletters/email lists. Both put out information on what's happening in Fresno. Maybe y'all know about them already, and I don't know if the events are any good but at least they're trying to get the word out that something is happening!

One is Fresno Famous -- check out www.fresnofamous.com.

The other is the Fresno Arts Council newsletter -- email fac-list-request@fresnoarts.info to join.
have fun!

Early rates extended for two dance camps this summer

hey there, Fresno alternatives -

There are two dance and music camps happening near Fresno this summer -- the Northern California Dance Collective's summer dance camp, June 15-24, which offers a wide range of daytime classes plus evening boogies and performances, and Camp Fareta, a West African drum and dance camp, July 8-15. Both are primarily for adults, with Kids Camp programs offered. NCDC has vegetarian meals, Camp Fareta serves meat, both have former Esalen chefs.

Both of these events have extended their early registration rates....NCDC because their flyers got out so late, and Camp Fareta because word just came out that the other West African drum and dance camp in California, Tambacounda, is not happening this summer.

So now's the time to check it out! Go to ncdcdances.org for info on NCDC (a 501C3 non-profit) or westafricandance.com for info on Camp Fareta. Both camps happen at Camp Hye Sierra, which is about an hour east of Fresno in the southern Sierras. Escape the Fresno heat and do some great dancing this summer!

hey there, Fresno freaky peeps -

If you're looking for something different to do this summer, there are two dance and music camps happening this summer, mostly for adults but with kids' programs too, an hour east of Fresno in the southern Sierras. Fresno sure is cookin' in the summer, and in case you want to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire...there are two residential events you might want to check out.

One is the Northern California Dance Collective's annual summer dance camp, happening for the 13th year this summer, June 15-24. There's a wide variety of teacher-led classes in all kinds of dance and movement -- contact improv, partner dance, 5 Rhythms, African dance, authentic movement, yoga, etc. etc. -- plus lots of opportunities for regular folks to offer their talents spontaneously. There are evening freestyle dances, lots of performance opportunities, and a fire circle for the Solstice. The meals are prepared by former Esalen chefs and are vegetarian, mostly organic, prepared with the help of camper volunteers. This one is very well suited to the dancer-artist-communitarian-nature lover-vegetarian-poly-pagan-clothing optional-Burning Man-LGBT and all-around friendly, freaky type of person. Check ncdcdances.org for more info on that one or email info@ncdcdances.org.

Then July 8-15 is Camp Fareta's second year, where 15-20 master artists from Guinea, Mali, and Senegal will gather to teach West African dance, drum, music and history. The meals will be prepared by another former Esalen chef, and at this one there's lots of meat for those carnivores out there. This one is geared toward students of West African drum and dance and folks who just love West African culture and almost non-stop drumming, because you'll be immersed in it for a week! This one is a lot more racially diverse and probably a bit more conservative -- better keep your bathing suit on! Check Youssouf Koumbassa's website for more info on that camp -- westafricandance.com -- or write to campfareta@yahoo.com.

Both camps happen at Camp Hye Sierra, which is right near Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks. There's a lake for swimming and canoeing, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and lots of opportunities for great hikes, so if you've got a partner who doesn't share your interests, you can bring them along and they can have a vacation too!

I'm involved in organizing both of these camps, because I'm a dance junkie and because that's the way I want to live -- dancing, drumming, hanging out with beautiful people, eating great communal meals, all in a beautiful, natural setting. These are great resources for the Fresno community and it's time we got some of the Fresno alternatives to join us!

ok, I pulled this info off of www.fresnogoth.com
*snicker*

The Revue Café
620 E. Olive Ave. (559) 499-1844

A favorite place of ours to go drink coffee (or chai tea, yum!), and hang out with friends at. It’s warm and cozy inside, and has a nice patio outside, fun for people watching. One of the last places to go in Fresno that is actually a real café, not a corporate conglomerate that puts other café’s out of business, (but we won’t get into that). Support places like this, before there are none left! What ever happened to charm and locally owned?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veni Vidi Vici
1116 N. Fulton (559) 266- 5510

Sometimes bands cramp the entry way to the restaurant, or it’s a Dj Spinning records, but it adds to the ambiance, creating atmosphere, which so many restaurants and bars are lacking these days. The patio is very spacious and plush. There are two bars, one inside and the other outside, which is always a bonus. The food here is good too. This is a Tower District Favorite.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Livingstone’s Restaurant & Pub
831 E. Fern Ave. (559) 485- 5198

You have probably been here before, but if you haven’t, this is the place to go for a drink and to hang out with friends. Located in the Tower, it has a fantastic bar, great atmosphere, a very nice patio and wonderful pesto ravioli I might add! The taxidermy animals are a personal eye candy favorite. Colorful assortments of Fresno characters patronize this establishment. One drawback however are the loud- mouth drunks and college students that have forgotten that they are in the Tower District which has become a problem as the Tower District has gained popularity with the trendy crowd.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Club Fred
1426 N Van Ness Ave. (559) 233-3733

If you have lived any amount of time in Fresno, then you have probably seen your favorite local band here. Most bands in Fresno have played here as there are bands nearly every night of the week. If you haven’t been to Club Fred or haven’t heard of the place, then all hope for you has been abandoned, we can’t help you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Starline
833 East Fern Ave. (559) 485-7517

The Shroud, Black Tape For a Blue Girl and Hate Dept are just a few past shows that we enjoyed at this venue. Bands, bands and more bands can be seen here.

Unfortunately the Starline continues to only book the regular neighborhood bands that everyone has seen 10,000 times. we are still waiting for them to work with us on bringing cool goth and industrial acts to Fresno, although they have expressed little to no interest in the fresno goth scene or perspective live goth shows. some people just like things they way they are, unfortunately this creates a mundane atmosphere and night life in our opinion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Avalon Billiards
1064 N. Fulton (559) 495 - 0852

Out of every pool hall in Fresno, this is the coolest. Not only do they have a million pool tables, live Dj’s on occasion, they also have pin ball and arcade games!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Fresno Night Clubs & Bars

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

club Dance!
3075 N. Maroa Ave. (559) 224- 1024
Formerly the (2nd) Express dance club @ the old Nicola's Restaurant location.

Just North of the Tower, this is a real dance club. Out of every “club” venue in the entire city, this one is the real deal. The dance floor is spacious, the lights are state of the art, and they also have projection screens for cool visuals. The patio is actually large enough with plenty of tables and chairs to sit at. Red the bar tender makes badass drinks, my favorite being Bloody Maries! The club is divided into two sections, and has an 18+ side. On the other side is a dance floor and another bar! This is a cool place to go dancing in Fresno, unfortunately the main style of music on the regular nights is hip hop. Club Dance is the home of our beloved FUTURESHOCKK!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

club Deja Vu
708 N. Blackstone. (559) 445-0878
(on the corner of Blackstone & Bremer, between Olive and Belmont Ave.)

Club Deja Vu is another Fresno favorite for the un-mainstream. This venue has been a night club since the 70's and who knows what was there before that! Formerly known as the original Express nightclub and then club 708, this place has seen its fair share of changes but somehow remains the same. Haunted by many ghosts of Fresno's nightclub past, some familiar spirits still haunt the dance floor. with regular drag performances and late night club nights you will find a variety of events for a wide variety of clientele at club Deja Vu..

Club Deja Vu has been very cool with fresnogoth.com & club Futureshockk and has hosted such nights as the Rocky Horror night in October 2003 with the Futureshockk Dj's and New Years Eve 2003 with us as well! keep your eves on this venue. there are more killer parties to come!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The North Tower Circle
2777 N. Maroa Ave. (559) 229- 4188

This circular building looking somewhat like a UFO turned nightclub just so happens to be one of the best places to catch a drag show in the valley. Remember Boogie Nights? This place feels like a 1970’s night club. There are pool tables for the poolers, and a dance floor for the dancers. The patio is a nice escape after dancing all night with the queens after a show.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Red Lantern
4618 E Belmont Ave. (559) 251-5898

Dive bar to the fullest! Here at fresnogoth.com dive bar = our kind of place. Honky Tonk comes to mind when inside the rather rustic interior. Latino night here is killer, and if you are lucky enough to catch a drag show here, it will kick your ass and you will beg for more. This place reminds us of some of our favorite bars in San Francisco, such as the CW Saloon & the Stud!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Den
4538 E. Belmont Ave. (559) 255-3213

Lumber Jacks, Leather Daddies, and Manly Men frequent this bar. Home of the California Bears, this den is the perfect place for any bear or party animal.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tokyo Garden
1711 Fulton (559) 268-3596

Some of the most talented bands in Fresno rock out here! Located down town, this is a great place to see your favorite band that has probably been banned from the other places that can’t handle real rock-n-roll. Its very charming inside, the Asian deco is very cool.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zapp’s Park
1105 N. Blackstone (559) 266- 0334

Once the location of Zapps Park, a Fresno Landmark in the early 20th century, now a hole-in-the-wall bar. This place is pretty small, but packs in the crowds when a band plays. This is another Fresno Icon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Astro Motel
3393 N Parkway Dr. (559) 275-6743

This bar is so outrageously cool, and about the size your bedroom. With a table top Pac Man to play, interesting people to watch and a jukebox blaring old time country western, one would expect Patsy Clines ghost would hang out here too. A small group of your friends could pack the place, but no matter what, there’s always a good time to be had. If you haven’t been here before, it is a must to check out!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

La Fiesta
"F" Street, Chinatown

Located in Chinatown, downtown Fresno, this place is a must if you are into dives and odd places. Live Mariachi and Tejano bands are a regular occurrence on the weekends, when the bar is usually open. If you like Latin dance music or just like to have a wild time, La Fiesta is the place to go. Obviously exercise caution however. The venue has security, but is also in Chinatown. Park directly in front of the bar if you can, or at least go with a group of friends. Someone on the street is bound to ask you to buy food stamps from them so they can buy a donut or a bus ticket or something. But to me, this is part of the experience.

free skool fresno

Hi all I have recently started organizing a free skool in Fresno. I hope to have a web page up and running soon. here is some info about it. let me know what you all think. if any one would like to get involved let me know

Free Skool Fresno is a grass roots effort, volunteers from the community have come together to organize a network of learning groups where community members can exchange ideas experiences and skills without limitations in a open and positive environment. Classes are informal egalitarian, and are held in homes, social spaces, and parks. Classes range from artistic projects, workshops, reading groups, discussions, film screening, skill shares, DIY, outings, and whatever else the visionary muse takes us.
We all have knowledge and skills to share with one another.
If you are willing to learn, teach or help organize free skool, thene we'd like you to be part of it. we are all students and we are all teachers. If you have a class idea or would like to get involved in any way we would love to hear from you.

free skool santa cruz is a great site for info. http://santacruz.freeskool.org/news.php

My experience at Full Circle Brewing Co w/Cory Zamora

There ain’t nobody like Cory Zamora…..NOBODY. Cory is a well trained and talented dancer with the ability to teach a variety of people and personalities.

I had the great good fortune to dance at one of her shows the last Saturday of August. Saturday evening I had the time of my life dancing and watching some excellent dancing. The other dancers were Cory’s long term students (professional in their own right) Gregory and Lakisha. Although they were trained by Cory they have their own style and discipline, she has taught them to dance their dance. I saw people having fun being comfortable in their own skin and RaqN the Casbah!

This all took place at the Full Circle Brewing Company a big and roomy place, with a cool stage and great sound system. The dressing room area is cool too. Do ya like mead? The Full Circle Brewing Company beside being a micro-brewery offers mead. They are located in Fresno, CA at 620 “F” Street at Ventura in Historic China Town.

Cory’s showcases are not to be missed. They are always the last Sat of the month. In September that will be on the 30th. The doors will open at 7pm the showcase starts at 8:30 and there is a $5 cover charge. There is plenty of parking right out front.

The September 30th show is to the live music of MIRAGE! Mirage is a combination of Armenia/Turkish and Arabic music. The dancers to this wonderful live music will be of course Cory Zamora, Gregory and Jane Gamoian. Oh yeah and bring a hip scarf because Mirage is doing the music for “open dancing”. Did ya ever want to dance to live music…..here is you chance. If I wasn’t out of town I’d be there myself.

So come on out and have some fun, drink some brew (or mead) and enjoy the fully live Cory Zamora showcase at the Full Circle Brewing Company. For more details go to www.bellydancingbyzamoras.com

Hi everyone!

I've just started hula hooping, and I don't have any real skills yet. I've connected with some amazing people from SF (whenever I go dancing in the city, I seem to run into very cool hoopers!), and I'd love to bring some one out to lovely and ever so exciting Fresno for a Saturday workshop on dance hooping.

If we can get a group of about 15 people and some decent dance space, I think that we could lure some one out here!

Anyone interested in a hoop workshop?

--Kristine

Hi there - I'm looking for a Wiccan group to practice/train with. I'm been a solitary for a while, and then met with friends. I became the "leader" of that group by default since I had been doing it longer, but I really don't feel qualified, and felt somehow removed from the experience.
Please let me know if there are any groups out there!

Check this out. I've known about this for a while...even added a few places myself. Put in your zip, & find the closest independent coffee shop to you. Provided it's been added, of of course. It also shows you how many Starbucks there are per zip, for comparison purposes.

Everybody is welcome to come and join a few of us at the Revue in the tower district. We will be meeting there at or around 8PM. If you are a free thinker with a beautiful and peaceful outlook on life you are more than sure to find like minded people at this gathering. Lets show them that Fresno is not just a bunch of conservative stuck up republicans!! Show them that there are some free-thinking artists out there as well.

Since a lot of people on this tribe want to meet others but have problems, I suggest a format.. a monthly or bi-monthly book club.. where we read things of mutual interest and ask the local bookstore, borders or something to host us for an informal discussion after which we can go out for dinner or something..

what say you.. ?

Ashtanga/Mysore Yoga in Fresno

Okay, so there are no Ashtanga classes in Fresno, and that has been driving me up the wall. I've spent 6 months whinging about it, because doing a solo practice at home without adjustments is difficult. Now I'm being pro-active about it instead.

I'd like to open my home Mon-Sat mornings, 7-9 a.m., for Mysore-style Ashtanga yoga. I do NOT have teacher certification (I plan on getting it in a year or two, when my practice is more solid) so I am not claiming that. What I would like is to have a place for interested people with an Ashtanga practice of their own to gather and practice. My living room is huge and hardwood, so I'm more than happy to host it. I have a fabulous David Swenson video that I can lend to people (or play while we practice) if someone is interested but does not have prior experience -- however, I do want this time for my practice as well, so I do not want to be "teaching".

If anyone is interested, please reply directly to me (as I do not check Tribe often enough to get all the topic replies!)

Hello Fresno friends,
I live in Portland, Or but am working on a contract here in Fresno. I dont know anyone here and am taking some photo classes. I have an assignment to do some portraits and am looking for someone to model for me. No nudity or lingerie as it is for school work afterall. I joined this tribe because a friend of mine (Liz) belongs to it even though she lives in Vegas now and I hope to make some new friends and get my class assignments done.
Click on my jellyfish to see more about me.
Please e-mail me at redjelly39@yahoo.com or through tribe.
Love & Blessings,

Hello Everyone

The first official meeting for the starting of planning a burner regional took place tonight. In attendence were 5 of us. At last it begins. Since we are at the heart of California we came up with a name for our Regional - Fuego del Corazon (Heart of Fire).

I have also sent the first communication this evenning to "The Burning Man" oraganization letting them know of our starting plans and what from thier end we need to do next. We also have one of the team checking into an area for the Regional.

Sometime soon we would like to have an informal Pot Luck for any others that want to help out and or just get together. More information on that coming soon. This is a perfect opportunity for any interested in "Burning Man" or even the art community to come out.

Look forward to hearing from more of you and to a great Regional for Central Ca.

Hey party peeps! It's time to come celebrate with us! We are proud to say we've been doin' the FOCUS thang for 4 years now and what an amazing trip so far. We've had some of the biggest names come through this town, plus have showcased the best local talent. We are so happy and proud to bring the love to you, the people who support our precious scene here in Fresno.

This night will definitely be special to many people. But most importantly, we wanna make sure we pull out all the stops on this one! You will see some things you have never seen at FOCUS before. We don't wanna give too much away, but we suggest coming early and taking a journey through what we think will be very special and a great time!

Residents Bradley, Merle, and Clint Storm will be playing a 2x4 set all night long for ya. And the tables will be positioned to be up close and personal for all to check out--remember New Years Eve at Nectar? Not to be missed!

Let's not forget there will also be lots of new and improved eye candy as well for this party. NO::INPUT VISUALS will be teaming up with our good friend NATA to bring you the best visuals around! Lots of surprises in store...

See you on the dancefloor!

Hey, can anyone recommend some good places to smoke hookah in the Fresno, Clovis, and Madera areas? Preferably a place with a good 'scene' in the evenings? Bellydance too, maybe?

I am also seeking the elusive perfect cup of Turkish, Armenian, or Egyptian styled coffee . . .

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

I guess I am the new moderator for this Fresno group.....
so I hope to get to know most of you. Even someday have a event or two at my home. I have what I call a magical backyard....my "Fairy Forest". No Jokes OK!! Honestly after 18 years in Vegas looking at red rock and brown dirt my backyard is lush and green and lovely trees and space.

Ok enought of that I have a question for the folks living here more then me. Like most towns there are areas that are more of one culture or the other. Like a Chinatown in SF....Does Frenso have a Indian Town (and I mean India) where one can buy foods and clothing. Please let me know if you can gang.

Thanks

Tony

New Moderator! Vote!

Hello Fresno area people,

I have just moved to Las Vegas after only a few months of trying out the Fresno area . . . it didn't work out for me to live there!

But you people are wonderful and I think my point is proven that there are interesting things to do and people to meet in the area.

I hope you are all interested in continuing the tribe

however

it no longer makes sense for me to be your moderator.

Please step up and nominate yourself if you are willing to be the new moderator. A new moderator should be fair, local to the area, and on tribe frequently. Ideally the moderator would be someone who can continue to (organically) promote the tribe and stimulate new and interesting threads.

So please step up . . . I will be informing the tribe people about my stepping down, and hopefully this tribe can continue to exist.

After there are a couple people willing to do this, you guys can have whatever process you want to decide -- I suggest an informal vote lasting one week in duration. Only active members who check the tribe would get a voice, and I think a week is long enough.

For all of you I have befriended, I am still going to be on tribe, and I shouldn't be that hard to find. I will be working between Las Vegas and LA (and sometimes the SF Bay).

Good luck to you all,

Anyone know if there's a place accepting donations of clothing/shoes/coats/blankets for Hurricane Katrina victims?
Seems like everyone just wants cash....
I have lots of extra clothes n stuff that I would love to share with the people that lost everything.
<br
