hi, everyone -
I don't live in Fresno but I pass through there a few times a year...to go dancing in the mountains! In case any of you are dance-a-holics and aren't getting all your needs met in Fresno, here's the news on a couple of great opportunities to escape the heat and dance your a** off an hour outside of Fresno, in the southern Sierras.
NCDC Summer Camp, June 13-22, (ncdcdances.org) is more of a hippie/alternative camp in some ways -- vegetarian meals, progressive culture, clothing-optional waterfront, classes in all kinds of movement, art, and personal growth modalities, including contact improv, 5 Rhythms, African dance, yoga, authentic movement, Body Tales, breathwork and more. The participants are "dance-a-holics" from mostly the Bay area, branching out into Oregon and Washington and nothern and southern California. The classes are mostly beginner-level or mixed-level and most of the participants are white. There' s a great Kids Camp program so parents can dance and their kids will be taken care of.
Camp Fareta, July 6-13, (dancingvillage.com) is for folks who are into West African drum and dance (mostly Guinea-style, some artists from Senegal and Mali). There are some beginner-level classes but most classes are pretty fast-paced, geared to people who have some experience in this form. The meals cater to both vegetarians and meat-eaters, including some African food, and everyone keeps their swimsuit on at the waterfront! The participants come from all over the world, mostly the west coast but also Japan, Canada, Australia, etc. etc., and it's very racially diverse. There's a Kids Camp program there as well.
Both events happen at Camp Hye Sierra, which has a small lake for swimming and boating, hiking trails nearby, an open-air pavilion for dancing, a volleyball court, and lots of full-enclosed cabins as well as room for camping.
So check it out, and keep on dancing!
